Valery Meladze asked for Georgian citizenship

Actor Valery Meladze appealed to the Georgian Ministry of Justice with a request to grant him the citizenship of this country. Meladze made it in Batumi, where he came to participate in a concert in honor of the 80th anniversary of Vakhtang Kikabidze.
At the same time, Meladze stressed that he was not going to simultaneously renounce Russian citizenship. “I was born and raised in Georgia at a time when there were no borders between Russia and Georgia. Historically and mentally, our peoples have been and remain brotherly close to this day. The emergence of borders has set us a choice. I took action to erase this boundary for myself, ”he explained.
Since August 15, amendments to the Law on Citizenship entered into force in Georgia, according to which natives of the country can apply to the relevant departments with a request to restore Georgian citizenship lost as a result of obtaining citizenship of another country.Amendments have been initiated due to recent constitutional changes. To restore citizenship, natives of Georgia must, by December 31, 2020, apply to the State Services Development Agency under the Ministry of Justice.
Honored Artist of Russia Valery Meladze was born in Batumi in 1965. If he gets Georgian citizenship, he will be obliged to notify the Russian migration service about this within two months.
