Spider Argiope Brunnicha: photo, characteristic

Argiope Brunnicha (Argiope bruennichi), or the spider-wasp, is one of the brightest and most unusual representatives of the arachnid class living in our climate. Bright color often indicates toxicity in animals and plants. Since the spider is common in central Russia, for many who first encountered it, the logical question arises whether or not Argiope Brunnich is poisonous. The answer to it, as well as the description of the species and interesting facts about these creatures are presented later in the article.

Argiope belongs to the aranemorphic spider, which inhabit mainly temperate latitudes, and is also representative of an extensive and specific family of orbits. The name of the species is given in honor of the Danish zoologist and mineralogist Morten Trane Brunnich.

Argiope is a small spider. The body length of females reaches 1.5 cm, males are significantly less - up to 0.5 cm. In adult individuals, there is a pronounced sexual dimorphism. Bright color peculiar to females. They have an oblong-rounded abdomen. On the backs of females there is a pattern in the form of a row of black stripes on a bright yellow background. This gives them an external resemblance to the wasp, which accounts for the second name. The head of the breast is silvery, thin and long legs of light color with wide black rings. Males are almost three times smaller than females, inconspicuous and inconspicuous: abdomen narrow, pale beige color with two dark stripes. The legs are long and thin with dark fuzzy rings. On the second pair of extremities (pedipalps), the bulbus (male genitals) are pronounced.

Habitat

The species of argiope Brunnich (photo in the text) is widely distributed in Central and Southern Europe, North Africa, Kazakhstan, Small and Central Asia, India, Japan, Korea and China, and in the Caucasus. The northern limit of habitat in Russia, according to the data at the beginning of the 70s of the last century, reached 52-53º. sh. Since 2003, information began to arrive that argiope was found far to the north of the indicated feature.

In Russia, this type of spider can be found on the territory of the Oryol, Bryansk, Lipetsk, Belgorod, Penza, Voronezh, Ulyanovsk, Tambov, Saratov, Ryazan, Tula, Moscow and Chelyabinsk regions. In 2015, an argiope was discovered in the Rdeysky Reserve (Novgorod region). An unusual way of movement of young individuals - by the wind - contributes to active settlement.

Observed argiope Brunnich to xerophilic vegetation. Spiders prefer dry air and do not tolerate high humidity. They settle, as a rule, on grassy plants and bushes located on meadows, roadsides, forest edges and other open sunny sites.

Argiope belongs to the family of orb-web spiders and is an excellent master in the art of weaving cobwebs. The catching net is large, wheel-shaped. In the center there are threads that form the original zigzag pattern (stabilum). This is the hallmark of all orbiting spiders. Argiopa has two threads, they are located opposite each other and diverge from the center of the network to its peripheral part. Scientists believe that the main purpose of stabililementum is a reflection of ultraviolet rays and, thanks to this, the attraction of insects into the trap.

The argiop nets Brunnich are beautiful in their own way. A complex web is created from multi-layered threads. This is possible due to the special structure of the limbs. The last pair of legs of the spider has three simple claws and toothed bristles, as well as an appendage in the form of a spike, which allows you to weave from separate threads original and intricate patterns.

The spider webs trap in twilight time; it takes about an hour to create them. Females, as a rule, sit in the center, spreading their legs wide. Visually, the spider resembles the letter X. Web is located at a distance of no more than 30 cm from the ground. In case of danger the spider jumps off and takes cover on the ground.

What does argiope eat?

The basis of the ration of the spider argiope Brunnich consists of representatives of the order of the orthoptera. These are mainly crickets, grasshoppers and locusts. In addition, the network gets flies, fillies, mosquitoes. In agriopa characteristic way of feeding for all arachnids. After the victim enters the web, the spider quickly rushes to it, bites and injects poison. After this, the prey is wrapped with cobwebs. Under the influence of enzymes the caught insect becomes suitable for the use in food. The spider simply sucks the liquid contents of the cocoon, leaving only the chitinous shell from the victim.

Reproduction of argiopes

The mating period begins immediately after the molting of the female, which precedes puberty. At this time, its covers are still soft. Everyone knows the sad fate of the male karakurt spider (black widow). It is simply eaten by the female immediately after mating, thereby increasing the chances of survival of her offspring. In the case of Agriopa, we observe a similar situation.

In July, at the edges of the web, as a rule, you can see a male waiting for the last molt of the female. As mentioned above, one pair of his limbs transformed into bulbus. In the process of fertilization, one of them falls off. If the male has time to escape from the female, then he can mate with another female individual.

The eggs of Argiope Brunnicha lay in a large cocoon (pictured above), resembling in structure a box of a plant. It is located near the web. The spider is prolific, the number of eggs laid at a time reaches several hundred. At the beginning of autumn young spiders are born. They leave their cocoon in a rather peculiar way. Juveniles climb to elevations, then release a long string and with a gust of wind are carried along with it.Thus, the species is resettled in natural biotopes. The full life cycle of this type of spider is one year.

In the next photo you can see the spiders, just emerging from the cocoon.

Argiopa Brunnicha spider: poisonous or not?

According to researchers, the spider wasp calmly refers to the presence of man and is not afraid of him. Therefore, physical contact with him is quite possible, especially if you piss him off. The concentration of poison when a spider bite is negligible, it can not harm the human body. However, a bite can cause slight redness and itching, especially in people prone to allergies.

Keeping spider wasps at home

Due to the spectacular coloring of the spider-wasp quite often chosen as a terrarium pet. In captivity, the representative of the species feels fine. For its content you can adapt the aquarium, in which one of the sides will be covered with a grid with small cells. Keep spider better alone. When living together, individuals can compete and show aggression, as a result one of them is likely to die.
