The toy began to go on sale around 1955 and lastedabout 15 years. Until 1961, it cost 360 rubles., After the Khrushchev monetaryreforms - 36 rubles., but in fact, and in another case, the coveted dream of manyboys - and the road was sold only in the largestdepartment stores of the USSR, such as "Children's World" or "Toy House." Most often, the road was bought by budget organizations of children's creativity - at home, clubs and circles of young technicians.
Valentin Tereshchenko "Yesterday and Today" Pioneers ""
For the first time on the shelves of the Central Baku Department Store, I saw the Pioneer in the summer of 1958. I remember that I could hardly get closer to examine the sparkling green cars and the bright blue diesel locomotive. On the side stood the most beautiful train station in the world with benches waiting for a train and windows of ticket offices. On the other hand - a booth with a pipe, a traffic light, a crossing, a bridge ...
Special enthusiasm was expressed by older children, who almost completely closed us, a small fry, a view of a wonder!
I must immediately say that in September of the 58th year I had to knock the first round date - 10 years! I also note that we were children not spoiled toys, especially technical.
On the next summer holiday Sunday, our family walked around the city and, of course, by hook and crook I dragged everyone into the coveted department store. Mom, seeing the price tag, made a long moan, grabbed my hand to get away quickly ... But suddenly a supporter appeared in the form of an older brother, who turned 23 years old in the spring. They pushed me away by force, but he stayed and suddenly suggested: "Let's throw off and buy our brother this anniversary railway for our anniversary!"
As it became known later, my brother wanted to thoroughly understand the bundle of wires that looked out of the box. It was a multifunctional railway, in which even the idea of an automatic blocking that had just arisen on a large railway was implemented! For this reason, the path itself was a three-rail route.
A wide gesture brother laid out 6 rubles! Mom, shaking her head disapprovingly, still scraped 10 rubles in her purse. And the father, sighing and scratching the back of his head, silently took out 20 rubles from a thick bundle and put it in a common pot! I stood not breathing. Is this wonderful railway already at home now?
For some reason, they sent us behind the box to the basement along the side stairs (later in all subsequent times, when I was in this department store, I always turned my head towards this staircase).
The box was bulky and very heavy, but it was the IRON road.
At home, of course, I was not allowed to get close to the road, while my brother was dealing with all the difficulties of collecting and debugging. For him with a higher education it took about 3 hours. Perfectly published in 1955 on coated paper assembly instructions did not allow to immediately connect and run the road. For example, many were unclear in the installation of electrical wires and terminals. It seems that everything is visible in the pictures, clearly and clearly, there is marking on the wires and terminals, the veins are all colored, and when you start to collect in reality it doesn’t work right away ... Some pages of instructions are written in the original.
On the first assembly of rails took about an hour. Fortunately, all the lashes are numbered. In total, there were 7 straight rail sections and 16 curves (in the manual it is written - radius).I was amazed at the automatic closing of the barriers when the train was approaching the crossing and the appearance of a switchman from the checkpoint booth. At the same time he had a bright green light in his hands. The officer on duty at the station on the platform famously raised the flag also in green and held it right up to the train's aisle ... A miracle, in the passenger cars even the light was on!
When, in the end, the railway was launched, there was a quiet delight of all relatives, well, I don’t have to say anything about me!
The rolling stock consisted of the IS-51 locomotive (Joseph Stalin - 1951) with an axial formula of 2- (1 + 1) -2, two passenger and one covered wagons, and an open platform. The motor car had an ultra-modern group electric drive through an articulated gear train. The heavy body of the locomotive relied only on the motor cart, which made it possible to realize high values of the thrust force. Guides carried only their own weight, which at high speeds sometimes led to their descent, which, however, did not affect the further movement of the train ... until the first arrow! If you thought that this was the place where the meeting took place, then you are deeply mistaken, no, on the switches, the wheels themselves jumped onto rails. What is not modern "frogs"!
And during a descent or any other short circuit after a couple of seconds, the protection was triggered and a bright red light on the central control panel was switched on! The restoration of the chain was possible only after the cooling of the bimetallic plate and, of course, the elimination of the descent or short circuit.
All these innovations brought my brother and me to indescribable ecstasy: perfect short circuit protection, smooth speed control, a valid reliable three-digit auto-lock, path lighting with locomotive spotlights, and turnouts and crossings - with individual lanterns. Bright festive lighting station, the light in the box office. To my great regret, an AC collector traction motor was used on a locomotive-electric locomotive, which did not allow for remote reversing. The direction of movement could only be changed by a switch located in an awkward place on the motor cart under the body skirt.
I was also impressed by the automatic coupling, which allowed me to connect the cars without my participation. The illustration shows the coupling of two passenger cars. But there was a problem with uncoupling, especially on curves.
Naturally, not only my whole class was visiting, but without exaggeration the whole school №174! Rumors spread quickly!
Later, when the base two circles became a bit boring, I made a dead-end station. Often in the summer I carried out the box and laid out the road in our cozy, shady courtyard, which aroused genuine interest among all our neighbors, numerous children of different ages. Since the city of Baku is located on the hills, the courtyard surface had a clear bias towards the street, which required the creation of an effective braking system. As it should be, the brakes of passenger cars and the auxiliary handbrake of the locomotive, which protruded from the window of the assistant driver, were made.
Of course, the sweepingness of the decomposed railway did not allow it to be left on the floor for a long time. Collected, played - carefully disassemble, fold and slide the box under the table. A weekly reward was applied in the family: if there were no triples in the report card, then it was allowed to lay out the road on Sunday ... How I didn’t want to collect it in the evening, put it in a box !!
And one more thing to pay attention to: after the game, I was smeared from head to foot in engine oil and some soot.
