The mansion at Gagarinsky Pereulok, 15/7 (Khrushchevsky Pereulok) was rebuilt in 1816 and belonged to Baron Vladimir Ivanovich Steingel - Colonel, who participated in the battles of the Patriotic War of 1812, and the Decembrist.
A single-storey house with arranged mezzanines, built of wood, is one of the rare examples of buildings of the “post-fire” Empire style of the city of Moscow, which has survived to this day with almost no changes.
In 1824 the poet and Decembrist Kondraty Fedorovich Ryleev stayed here.

The history of this house is associated with Freemasonry. The fact is that Steingel was a member of this secret organization and provided the premises of his mansion for holding meetings of the Masonic Order of the city of Moscow.
They say that the building has preserved that very secret room, which could be reached only by passing an intricate maze from other rooms and transitions.

In October 1830 Nikolai Nikolaevich Turgenev, the headquarters captain and uncle of the writer Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev, entered the rented house.
Varvara Petrovna Turgeneva, the wife of brother Nikolai Nikolayevich, along with her children Nikolay, Ivan and Sergey settled in the house. True, the family lived here for only a year, and then moved into a house in Sivtsev Vrazhek Lane.

A little later, the Lopatins' family redeems their ownership, during which in the middle of the 19th century a certain rebuilding of the mansion was carried out.

Building 15 on Ryleev Street, built on the site of an old building in 1815, is one of the remarkable works of the early Moscow Empire. It was built on the order of the office of the Moscow Office of the Commander-in-Chief, who was a direct participant in the restoration of the city after the fire of 1812, and V.I. Steingel, the future Decembrist. In the years 1830-1831with her brother, Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev's mother lived with her children in the house where she lived with her children. From 1872 to 1917 the Lopatins family owned the house, whose representatives left a noticeable mark on science and culture. The well-known in Moscow “Lopotin environments” took place here, which were visited by L.N. Tolstoy and V.O. Klyuchevsky, I.A.Bunin and V.S. Soloviev.

House in Gagarinsky Lane, 15/1990 - 1996
The one-storey house of a poor noble estate was built between 1813-1817 in the Empire style. Preserved details of interior decoration: doors, cornices, a cupboard in the bedroom with traces of painting. In small offices interesting carved walnut doors, one of which is disguised as a cupboard. She retracts into the wall and leads to a secret, “Masonic” room according to legend. A part of the underground passage, which connected the building with the mansion on the opposite side of the alley, was also preserved. The house until 1819 really belonged to the Freemason and Decembrist V.I. Steingel, arrested after the December uprising of 1825. Nowadays, an eminent genealogist, a connoisseur of Moscow and a collector of Yu.B.Shmarov, lived in a house after the camps and exile.
