I | MASTER NIKON. Tilt-shift lenses

We are used to the fact that optics differs in focal length, aperture, and the presence of zoom. But what is tilt-shift lenses, how do they work, why are they needed and where are they used? Our experts will tell you about this and many other things in the new Nikon Teaching Master: Alexander Ivanov, Kamil Kutushev, Maria Alekseeva, Yury Fedorov.
And the traditional competition: we are waiting for your unusual work using tilt-shift lens in the comments here until September 10! We remind you that photos must be taken on Nikon! According to the jury, the author of the best one will receive Nikon's special souvenirs! Good luck and bright mood!

The author: Kamil Kutushev
Translated from English tilt - tilt, shift - shift. Accordingly, such lenses work with the optical axis, shifting it or tilting relative to the default position. Due to the fact that the angle between the plane of the photo and the plane of the camera's sensor changes, the photographer has great opportunities to work with perspective, as well as with different sharpness of the objects in the image. For example, when shooting architecture, tilt-shift will allow to “preserve” the vertical walls of buildings, which, when shooting with a conventional lens, tend to lean towards the center of the frame. Such a lens is useful not only when taking pictures of architecture, but also in landscape and even in food photography.
In the Nikon lineup there are several lenses with perspective control function: PC NIKKOR 19mm f / 4E ED, PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f / 3.5D ED, PC-E Micro NIKKOR 45mm f / 2.8D ED and PC-E Micro NIKKOR 85mm f / 2.8 D.
Maria Alekseeva:
“The classic use of tilt-shift lenses is architecture photography. In order to correct perspective distortions, when the camera is tilted relative to the object (which is why the vertical lines visually converge), graphic editors are often used. This leads to deterioration of image quality and loss of control over framing directly at the time of shooting. The tilt-shift lens allows you to avoid tilting the camera by shifting the focusing plane relative to the optical axis of the lens, thereby keeping the vertical lines in the frame straight.
In addition, the tilt-shift lens also allows the plane to be tilted relative to the camera matrix. When shooting on a lens without perspective control, the focusing plane is parallel to the matrix plane. By adjusting the tilt-shift lens, you can set a different angle of displacement of the focusing plane.By tilting the focusing plane, photographers get one of the most famous artistic effects: miniaturization.
I am using a tilt-shift PC-E Micro NIKKOR 45mm f / 2.8D ED lens. I appreciate his luminosity and excellent optical performance. The lens allows me to take a fresh look at familiar plots, while keeping an excellent backlight perfectly and providing a contrast image even on an open aperture. Indispensable on short journeys, when you want to take a couple of shots with you, but the situation doesn’t have to do with it - an overcast or too flat uninteresting light.
Working with this lens, I made a few rules for myself, which I’ll share with pleasure:
● It is easiest to achieve the effect of a thumbnail by removing from a high point. This photo was taken from the Old Town Hall in Prague.

Lens: PC-E Micro NIKKOR 45mm f / 2.8D ED
Aperture: f / 2.8
Exposure: 1/250
ISO: 200
Focal length: 45 mm
● The important point is the choice of where to focus. First of all, I keep in my head the approximate slope of the plane. I try to either put small details or inscriptions into focus or divert focus as much as possible, otherwise I will get unwanted noise and unnecessary accents in the frame.I plan to focus on the entire frame, I remind myself to once again run around the frame perimeter in the camera's viewfinder: with a tilt-shift lens, it's easy to get carried away and focus only on the sharp zone.

● I control backfocus with double attention. I try not to place too bright or too contrasting spots in this zone. I am looking for something interesting in backfocus: smoke, fog, evening lights, patterns. By the way, the photo is also taken from a high point (the Cloak Bridge in Cesky Krumlov).

Kamil Kutushev:
“In creative photography, I often use the PC-E Micro NIKKOR 45mm f / 2.8D ED tilt-shift lens. A lens can almost always turn an uninteresting frame into an artistic sketch. This is an interesting and creative lens that does not like haste and inattention. You can easily find unusual angles and different frame accents in one composition. It often happens that you have to choose between the same frames, but with different objects of focus.
A little about my experience of using this lens in the framework of the architecture:
● The first time, when I only got tilt-shift, I liked to make city miniatures, vertical shift. I used to do the same in Photoshop, so I quickly got bored. The most important thing when shooting is to be as high as possible.

Lens: PC-E Micro NIKKOR 45mm f / 2.8D ED

● Then I began to select the necessary objects, and not to make thumbnails. It is necessary to take pictures in LiveViev, be sure to see exactly where the focus falls, and the overall composition of the frame so that you do not have to cut it in the photo editor. If you photograph in the dark, do not forget about the tripod. This is not a reportage lens, so you have to “sweat” before you get the necessary frame.

● Tilt-shift lens can select two objects: near and far. This requires a certain angle and distance. How do I do this? First, I build focus and composition on a distant object and move until I find the position from which the near object is in focus and in the composition. With experience, an understanding will come about at what distance two objects should be.

Alexander Ivanov:
“For several years now I have been engaged in macro photography of plants, namely, flowers. For me, this is a whole, infinite world that allows you to create, create, expand the boundaries of your own professional opportunities and carry this art to people.Of course, in macro photography, as in any other type of photography, everything depends not only on the author, but also on the technique used. One of my latest discoveries was the tilt-shift PC-E Micro NIKKOR 45mm f / 2.8D ED lens.

● The PC-E Micro NIKKOR 45mm f / 2.8D ED is ideal for shooting in confined, confined spaces. A wide angle of 51 ° allows you to fit a fairly large area of the object to be shot into the frame. When shooting in rooms, studio shooting, when there is already a wall or door behind your back and you cannot “distance” the object, such characteristics save the situation and save the photographer from headaches.

● This lens is irreplaceable during macro photography. The shortest shooting distance is 0.253 m, the maximum scale is 1: 2. Due to this, the subject is at a sufficiently close distance to the camera. The space that you can “fit” in one frame allows you to engage in such types of shooting as: subject, macro and food photography.

● The presence of only manual focus in this case is not a minus. Since the Tilt-Shift lens is designed for thoughtful, creative photography, in which the rush will only lead to a negative result. Therefore, you get used to the lack of autofocus quickly enough.

● The ability to concentrate on certain parts or objects during the shooting process expands the boundaries for creativity. The shift and rotation functions allow you to literally “snatch” the most interesting “highlights” of the frame. Think outside the box, look at familiar things from a different angle, be creative - a Tilt-Shift PC-E Micro NIKKOR 45mm f / 2.8D ED lens will be able to “grab” any of your ideas and bring it to the viewer. ”

Yuri Fedorov:
“Despite the fact that Tilt-Shift lenses are not so loved by many novice photographers, I have used this lens quite often for five years in my work. For me, tilt-shift is an indispensable assistant both at wedding photo shoots and at creative projects, because it allows you to solve various tasks. Tilt-shift often do not like for the lack of autofocus, but the use of such a lens helps to overcome various limitations on the depth of field and perspective, thereby creating original, unusual effects when shooting.

● Tilt / Shift lenses have one exceptional feature that you will not find in any other lens. This is the mobility of the front group of lenses, due to which you can tilt and shift the optical scheme relative to the photosensitive sensor. This feature of the lens allows the photographer to correct geometric distortions, control perspective and change the depth of field. The latter, in turn, is for me the highest priority and favorite quality of tilt-shift lens. After all, through it you can get the most difference in the depth of field in different parts of the scene being photographed.

● Modern programs and graphic editors allow you to change and correct perspective images in order to achieve unusual effects without using a Tilt-Shift lens. But it’s not a secret to anyone that every photographer appreciates his work and his time, so he would gladly give preference to photographs taken at once with certain effects than those processed in a few hours in graphic editors. However, along with all the advantages, the tilt-shift lens has one significant drawback. And this is its high cost, which can not but put the choice of novice photographers: choose to save time or money. And most often, beginners choose the latter, referring to the fact that they will not be able to use this lens in everyday shooting.

● One of my favorite effects is turning people into miniature figures in various locations. On the Internet there is a huge amount of fascinating images of buildings and objects of architecture, as if taken from a bird's-eye view, and therefore looking in pictures by small houses. I do the same in my work, only with people. And all this thanks to a tilt-shift lens, and not graphic editors and quadcopter, as it may seem at first glance. After all, the most frequently asked question under my work, taken from a height, is associated with the use of unmanned aerial vehicles. And my answer is always the same: the effect of "miniature" or "toy" can be achieved thanks to the short and selective depth of field of the tilt-shift lens.

Tilt-shift lenses will also be useful in landscape, architectural and subject photography. In short, if you want to get unusual interesting photos with different creative effects or can not solve a specific problem when shooting with standard optics, feel free to choose the Tilt-Shift lens. ”
