Danish organization launched an amateur rocket in the Baltic Sea

On August 4, 2018, the Danish non-profit aerospace organization Copenhagen Suborbitals launched the Nexo II suborbital rocket. The test took place in the Baltic Sea. Launched from the floating Sputnik platform, the rocket reached a height of 6.5 km, after which it made a soft descent by parachute. Copenhagen Suborbitals staff also managed to find the Nexo II head fairing.

Nexo II has a length of 5.6 m, weight 200 kg and works on a mixture of oxygen and ethanol. The carrier is designed to develop technologies that will be used on a more powerful rocket Spica rocket. She will be able to deliver one person to a height of over 100 km. Representatives of Copenhagen Suborbitals have already announced that the successful launch of the Nexo II paves the way for the construction of Spica.

Like the Nexo II, the Spica engine will run on a mixture of oxygen and ethanol. The length of the carrier will be 13 m, weight (in the filled state) - 4000 kg. Of these, 300 - 350 kg will fall on a sealed capsule in which the pilot will be placed.According to the plan, during the launch, the rocket will perform a vertical acceleration with a duration of about 90 seconds, reaching an altitude of about 50 km and a speed of 3600 km / h, after which the pilot capsule will be separated. She will continue to fly independently and reach a maximum altitude of 105 km. Then the capsule will make a soft descent on parachutes. The total duration of the flight will be 9 minutes.

Copenhagen Suborbitals was established in 2008. The main goal of the organization is to prove that access to near-Earth space is not the exclusive prerogative of states and large companies, and that even a small group of individuals can send a person into space.

Copenhagen Suborbitals is funded solely by sponsorship donations and crowdfunding. The creation of aerospace technology is carried out by volunteers in accordance with the principles of open source. Members of the organization try to use the most simple and publicly available materials in their work - for example, valves or hoses that can be bought at a hardware store. During its existence, Copenhagen Suborbitals has carried out six tests of its missiles.
