Astronomers have discovered an infrared halo around a neutron star.

Neutron stars are one of the few space objects whose existence was predicted even before their detection. They form during supernova explosions caused by the collapse of the nuclei of supermassive stars. Young neutron stars (pulsars) have an extremely high rotational speed (it can reach hundreds of revolutions per second) and actively radiate in the radio and X-ray range.

A team of astronomers from the United States and Turkey discovered the unusually powerful infrared radiation emitted by the region surrounding the neutron star RX J0806.4-4123. Its diameter is 200 AU. The discovery was made using the Hubble telescope and subsequently confirmed by ground-based observations. Previously, scientists have never fixed such powerful infrared radiation associated with a neutron star.
RX J0806.4-4123 is part of the "magnificent seven".This is the name of a group of seven nearby single neutron stars separated from 650 to 1600 light years of the Earth. Their distinctive feature is that the temperature of their surface is greater than that of objects of similar age.

Astronomers have put forward two versions explaining the excess IR radiation from the RX J0806.4-4123. According to the first version, the neutron star is surrounded by a dust disk remaining after a supernova explosion. Interaction with this material could slow down the rotation period of the RX J0806.4-4123 and increase its surface temperature.

According to another theory, it is all about the collision of the charged particles emitted by the RX J0806.4-4123 (the so-called pulsary wind) with the matter of the interstellar space through which the neutron star moves. It leads to the formation of a shock wave and the appearance of an excess of infrared radiation. But It is worth noting that all such structures known to date emit X-rays. If the excess IR radiation around the RX J0806.4-4123 is indeed associated with the pulsar wind, this will be the first such find.
